WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: UNDERSTANDING  SYMPTOMS

Understanding Estrogen

Who uses Natural Estrogen Replacement?
Women with symptoms of Menopause or Post Menopause hormone imbalance who have low Estrogen levels.

What is Estrogen?
Estrogen is not one hormone.  Estrogen means a group of hormones. There are three types of Estrogen:
Estrone (E1), Estradiol (E2) and Estriol (E3).  There is also a group of compounds called Phytoestrogens, usually
found in herbs or foods, which can have "estrogen-like" effects in the body. Phyto-estrogens are not actually estrogen
hormones. Estradiol (E2) is the primary estrogen produced by the ovaries. Estrone (E1) is formed from estradiol and
androstenedione, a male hormone. It is a weak estrogen and is the most abundant estrogen found in the body after
menopause which accounts for menopause related symptoms with declining estradiol and estriol levels. Estriol (E3) is
formed from estradiol. Natural Estradiol (E2) and Estriol (E3) are used in natural estrogen supplementation. Estrone
(E1) is rarely used in supplements.  The natural estrogen molecules cannot be patented because they occur naturally
in the human. To have a patent, (i.e. to be a drug), a substance must be altered from its natural molecular state.

Symptoms related to low Estrogen hormone levels:
Hormones tested in the saliva profiles include:
• Estradiol
• Progesterone
• Testosterone
• DHEA
• Cortisol

Symptoms Guide
Types of Hormone Imbalance
When hormones are out of balance, these imbalanced interactions may provoke a wide range of symptoms.

FOR WOMEN

SYMPTOMS OF HORMONE IMBALANCE
Acne or oily skin
Bloating
Bone loss
Cystic ovaries
Decreased fertility
Depression
Excess facial and body hair
Foggy thinking
Hot flashes
Heart Palpitation
Headaches
Heavy or painful menses or periods
Irregular periods
Irritability
Loss of muscle mass
Loss of scalp hair
Low libido
Memory lapses
Mood swings or irritability
Nervousness
Night sweats
Poor concentration
Sleep disturbances
Tender or fibrocystic breasts
Thinning skin
Uterine fibroids
Urinary incontinence
Vaginal dryness
Weight gain
Checking two or more symptoms in this category indicates a need to test both Estradiol (E2) and progesterone (Pg)

FOR MEN

Who should be tested?
Men concerned about Enlarged Prostate or Prostate Cancer. Men over 50 or men over 40 with a family history or
other high risk factors for Prostate Cancer. Look at the symptoms below for assessments.

SYMPTOMS OF BASIC HORMONE IMBALANCE
The testes produce nearly 95% of all male testosterone. The balance is supplied by the adrenal glands. They also
produce small amounts of estrogen. The brain produces the pituitary hormones follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and
luteinizing hormone (LH) which trigger hormone production from the testes.  As a man gets older, testosterone levels
fall and estrogen levels tend to rise.  Lower testosterone levels may affect bone density, muscle strength, body
composition and sex drive.  The imbalance that occurs when testosterone is low in relation to estrogen may also
contribute to prostate problems.

Symptoms:
Apathy
Bone loss
Burned out feeling
Decreased Libido
Decreased mental clarity or sharpness
Decreased muscle mass or strength
Decreased stamina
Decreased urine flow
Depression
Erectile dysfunction
Hot flashes
Increased abdominal fat
Increased urge to urinate
Insomnia
Irritability
Low sex drive
Mood swings
Night sweats
Oily skin
Poor concentration
Prostrate problems
Sleep disturbances
Weight Gain Waist

Use the guides above to determine the correct test for you.

Types of Convenient Testing

Saliva testing is a convenient, inexpensive, and above all, accurate means of testing steroid hormones. Scientific
studies have shown a strong correlation between steroid hormone levels in saliva and the amount of hormone in the
blood that is active or “bioavailable.” It is this fraction of total hormone that is free to enter the target tissues in the
brain, uterus, skin, and breasts.

Saliva testing can be done anywhere anytime. Testing that relies on blood drawn in the doctor’s office makes it harder
to obtain samples at specific times (such as in the early morning) or multiple times during the day. In addition,
hormones in saliva are exceptionally stable and can be stored at room temperature for up to a week without affecting
the accuracy of the result. This offers maximum flexibility in sample collection and shipment.

Blood Spot Testing
When your doctor says you need a blood test, wouldn’t you rather do just about anything than go down to a lab, sit in
a waiting room with a lot of people who don’t feel well, and then have a technician stick a big needle in your arm and
pull out a couple of vials of blood?

Now there’s an easier way!
You can do a wide range of highly accurate blood tests in the privacy of your own home with a simple, nearly painless
stick and a few drops of blood. It takes minutes. When you’re finished, simply put it into a prepaid container and drop it
the mail. That’s it! The results will be mailed or faxed to you or (your doctor if your prefer).

About Blood Spot Testing
Blood Spot testing is the future of blood testing. The process requires only blood from a nearly painless finger prick
and several tests can be run from a single sample. Blood spot testing provides results on a par with those from serum
tests but without the cost and inconvenience of conventional blood drawing.  In addition, collection times can be
optimized for fasting baseline hormone levels and assessment of HRT dosing and diurnal hormone testing.

Combined Saliva and Blood Spot Tests      You can have combination kits.
Putting saliva and blood spot test materials together in one combination kit makes it convenient to collect hormones of
the three major glandular systems--reproductive, thyroid, and adrenal--on the same day at the optimal time. This is the
"three-legged stool" approach to hormone testing popularized by physician author, Richard Shames, M.D. (Thyroid
Power), in his latest book, Feeling Fat, Fuzzy and Frazzled?

You can choose from six combination profiles:
Two Comprehensive Female Profiles are available for women with signs and/or symptoms of menopause.

Two Comprehensive Male Profiles are available for men with signs and/or symptoms of andropause.

Two Fertility Profiles are available for women wishing to assess fertility issues.

In each group of two profiles, you can choose:
Estradiol (E2), Progesterone (Pg), Testosterone (T), and DHEA-S (DS) reproductive hormones in either saliva or
blood spot.

Profile I Kit  test these hormones in saliva.
Profile II Kit test these hormones in blood spot.
Also in each group of combination profiles, test include the four diurnal Cortisols in saliva and test thyroid hormones in
blood spot.

Saliva Tests Include:
In saliva: Estradiol (E2), Progesterone (Pg), Testosterone (T), DHEA-S (DS), and the four diurnal Cortisols.

Blood Spot Test Include:  Estradiol (E2) total, Progesterone (Pg) total, Testosterone (T) total, DHEA-S (DS), Follicle
Stimulating Hormone (FSH),  Luteinizing Hormone (LH),  Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), Free Triiodothyronine (fT3.),

Female Fertility Profile I & II
A convenient test to assess potential causes of female infertility: The Female Fertility Profiles I and II. If there is no
physical reason for infertility such as tubal damage, many of the different causes of female infertility can be related to
hormonal issues. These include ovarian insufficiency, luteal phase deficiency, polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid
deficiency, and stress. This simple test using our Combo Kit can identify potentially correctable hormone imbalances
and move couples further towards their goals of achieving pregnancy.
Hormones tested in both profiles are:  Estradiol (E2), progesterone (Pg), testosterone (T), DHEA-S, diurnal
cortisol (C) sampled four times during a day, thyroid hormones (free T3, free T4, TSH, and TPO antibodies), LH and
FSH. There are two profiles to select from: Profile I is saliva dominant, meaning that the sex (E2, Pg, T) and adrenal
(DHEA-S, C) hormones are tested in saliva, while the thyroid hormones, LH and FSH are tested in blood spot.
For those who prefer to have the sex hormones tested in blood instead of saliva, we created Profile II, which tests all of
the hormones in blood spot with the exception of the 4x diurnal C tested in saliva.
